Overview

BookMyShow is a leading online platform that enables users to book tickets for movies, events, concerts, and more. With a wide array of entertainment options, it has become a go-to destination for booking tickets in India.

My Role & Responsibilities

In this project, I independently spearheaded a comprehensive redesign of the BookMyShow app's key flow within a remarkable timeframe of under 48 hours. My responsibilities encompassed thorough research, user persona development, problem identification, brainstorming, conceptualising a robust design system, and crafting a high-fidelityuser-centric design for the key flow. This involved a holistic approach, combining strategic thinking, creative design, and execution to enhance user experience, streamline processes, and create an engaging interface for efficient ticket booking and event discovery. Moreover, considering the time constraint, I played the role of project manager to manage the time and work efficiently.

Context

Amidst a dynamic job interview process with "BookMyShow", I embraced the challenge to reimagine the renowned BookMyShow app's core flow. In just 48 hours, I meticulously researched, conceptualised, and crafted a high-impact redesign. Fuelled by my passion for user-centered design, I aimed to enhance the app's usability and aesthetic, showcasing my ability to swiftly translate insights into a tangible, intuitive, and visually engaging user experience.

Problem

Problem Statement

Going to the cinema or an event is a fun experience, but booking the tickets in the application feels like navigation is a really long and tiring process. How might we reimagine the future of ticket booking?

WHY do users feel exhausted using the app?

  • Booking tickets on the app is tiring because it involves too many steps and lacks personalisation.

  • Users struggle to find their nearest theater and have to enter their email repeatedly.

  • There's no option to add snacks after booking, and no quick ticket preview.

  • Users get frustrated when fees and taxes are added at the end, and the app's cluttered design adds to their stress.

  • Sharing tickets with friends is inconvenient, and seat numbers are revealed only after payment.

Problems Identified

01

Too many steps to book a ticket, making the user feel exhausted.

02

Too much clutter in the app, confuses the user, making the process of online booking stressful and tiring.

03

The UI design feels like it is in 2016 with bad gutter spaces and disarranged graphic elements

04

The post-booking experience is not as expected, it doesn’t allow users to share the tickets and invite their friends or family, and they don’t get an option to add snacks and other refreshments after booking.

Design

Brainstorming

During brainstorming for this project, I conducted focused idea generation sessions to innovate key aspects of the BookMyShow app. Collaboratively, I explored streamlined ticket booking, personalized recommendations, and efficient navigation. Through dynamic discussions and iterative thinking, I honed in on creative solutions, ensuring a seamless user journey. The brainstorming process empowered me to fuse user-centric concepts with cutting-edge design, ultimately elevating the app's functionality and user engagement.

Storyboarding

A student wants to book a movie ticket online but is frustrated with the number of steps & feels the booking process tiring. Then, he updates the app which is redesigned and is happy since it has a simpler and easier UI. This made his experience easier and simpler.

Target Users

After doing some intense research on the target users of BookMyShow, I found out that any person of any age who loves to be entertained is a key user of BMS and includes people with different occupations. But one common point that holds all these diverse people together is their love for entertainment.

User 1

About:

User A is a businessman with an extremely busy schedule and is a constant traveller for work. However, even with his extremely busy schedule, he constantly manages to find time to spend with his family. To keep up with his work-life balance, he prefers to go watch a cinema or a standup comedy or a sports event with his family every weekend.

Goals:

  • Prebook and schedule the event timing and date according to his and his family’s availability.

  • Book tickets without any interruptions on the app.

  • Spending time with family is a top priority.

  • Book tickets recommended by the family.

Frustrations:

  • Finds booking online as a time waste and tiring process. Hence, often prefers getting tickets offline as he finds it easier.

  • He hates it when he doesn’t know if his ticket is confirmed or not and doesn’t enjoy waiting for the confirmation notification.

About:

User B is a student. She is an extrovert and enjoys chilling out with her friends most of the time. She currently lives in a hostel with her parent’s money. She plans to hang out with her friends every weekend and is a total movie buff. Hence, she often makes plans to watch a movie with her friends and always takes the initiative of booking the tickets.

Goals:

  • Prebook movie tickets before all the tickets for that particular movie are sold.

  • Review a movie after watching the movie.

  • Read the reviews and ratings before going to a movie.

Frustrations:

  • Since she is a student, she can’t afford to lose money by the wrong booking. She prefers to look for discount coupons and offers.

  • She always wishes for a simpler way of booking tickets without so much effort.

User Flow

Lo-Fi Prototype

I executed lo-fi paper prototyping for the project, creating rudimentary sketches of the BookMyShow app's key flow. These minimalistic representations helped visualize user interactions and refine design concepts early in the process, guiding the development of a more intuitive and user-centered interface.
